چکیده
Abstract Background Free-range pig farming represents a minor proportion of production in France but is attracting an increasing number farmers because societal expectations and the opportunity to use pasture-grazed forage. However, this type faces several challenges, including biosecurity, parasitic management, contact with wild fauna pathogenic flora. Case presentation Two Gascon pigs raised on outdoor fattening farm Hautes-Pyrenees department were submitted after sudden death for necropsy at National Veterinary School Toulouse. The two different breeds from same group 85 animals that had grazed 4-ha plot land being used grazing first time. Based in-depth interview farmer, epidemiological information available, histology examinations, hypothesis great eagle fern intoxication was proposed. Although sample available diagnosis small, success administered therapy confirmed our diagnosis. It recommended short term, be prevented access by changing their pasture or removing plants. Vitamin B1 vitamin B6 via feed as Ultra B® 1 mL per 10 kg body weight day 2 days (providing 9 mg thiamine (vitamin B1) 0.66 pyridoxine B6) day). Marked remission observed, 6 intoxicated symptoms surviving (yielding therapeutic rate over 50%), did not compensate loss initial condition. In total, intoxication, died, recovered. Conclusions significance report lies scarcity cases reported literature, though such may become significant problem development rearing continues. Thus, should included differential nervous system swine. case also emphasizes importance anamnesis discussion farmer essential step guide

Isolation of an active glucoside in bracken fern, Pteridium aquilinum.
An active glucoside that enhanced release of histamine from rat peritoneal mast cells was isolated from a toxic fraction of bracken fern, Pteridium aquilinum, by partition column chromatography on Sephadex G-25. It was a yellowish amorphous powder on freeze-drying, readily soluble in water or ethanol, and insoluble in ether. It was hydrolysed with beta-glucosidase to release D-glucose. It was a...
متن کاملObservations on the Microanatomy of the Spermatozoid of the Bracken Fern (Pteridium aquilinum)
Salient features of structure of the spermatozoid of a fern (Pteridium aquilinum) have been determined by a combination of visual and ultraviolet microscopy, with electron microscopy of shadow-cast whole mounts and thin sections, using magnifications up to but not exceeding 50,000 diameters. Attention has been concentrated on the arrangement rather than on the internal details of the various pa...
متن کاملNuclear bodies in the maturing egg cell of a fern, Pteridium aquilinum.
Nuclear bodies about 250 nm in diameter, and with a strong affinity for uranium and acriflavine, appear in the nuclei of maturing egg cells of Pteridium. Many enter well-defined evaginations of the nucleus. The nuclear bodies are almost wholly digested by Pronase, but are resistant to ribonuclease and deoxyribonuclease. Radioactive labelling gives no evidence of the presence of nucleic acids, b...
متن کاملQuercetin, a rat intestinal and bladder carcinogen present in bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum).
Albino noninbred weanling male and female rats were fed a basic grain diet (Group 1) or a basic diet supplemented with 33% bracken fern [BF (Group 2)] or 0.1% quercetin [purity, > 99% (Group 3)] for 58 weeks. The quantities of quercetin and kaempferol (a close structural analog) in BF as glycosides were determined to be 0.57 and 1.1 g, respectively, per kg of dried BF. Estimated mean total cumu...
متن کاملCarcinogenic and mutagenic activities of milk from cows fed bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum).
Carcinogenicity, toxicity, and mutagenicity of the milk of bracken fern (BF)-fed cows were determined. Four Brown Swiss cows were fed a BF-containing diet, and two cows were fed a normal hay-grain diet. The milk obtained was fed to rats as either fresh or freeze-dried powdered milk mixed with grain diet: 9 of 34 fed whole milk and 11 of 56 fed powdered milk diet developed small intestine, kidne...
